The Department of Plant Crop of the Faculty of Agronomy of UFRGS has the following facilities for carrying out their activities.
In Porto Alegre, in the Faculty of Agronomy
1. Laboratory of biotechnology-consists of three laboratories (molecular biology, 96m2, plant physiology, 82m2, medium and samples preparation , 31m2) and a growth room (12m2) and it is located in the building of the Crop Plants and Horticulture departments. This has been approved by the CTNBio to conduct research with genetically modified organisms. On this biochemical, genetic, physiological and molecular many studies are developed.
2. Laboratory of seeds and field material manipulation- it is located next to the building (PLAV), 220m2. In this laboratory analyzes of parameters related to the performance and quality and preparation of plant material for specific analyzes, are performed.
3. Laboratory of Ruderal Flora (Laflor.)- consisting of two laboratories (Laboratory of Waste of herbicides and Laboratory of biomarkers and photosynthesis, and is located in front of the building of plants, 144 m2 The main activities in this lab are the analysis persistence and leaching of herbicides in cultivated soil through biosensing, and analysis of photosynthetic variables in cultured, weeds or native species by fluorescence measurement and gas exchange at the leaf blade.
4. Laboratory of Phytotechnics education:consisting of two rooms (hydroponic room and practical classes room) and it is located in the building of plants. Experiments performed here are those requiring hydroponic plant growths and physiological analyzes. Practical classes of disciplines related to physiology and management of crop plants are also ministered in this laboratory.
The Department also has heated greenhouses and cages with mesh, plus an area for growing crop plants or practical classes.
In Eldorado do Sul, in the Agricultural Experiment Station
Experimental area: field experiments are carried out in the experimental area of the own Department of approximately 30 hectares. The building of Crop Plants, with about 200 m², is home to agricultural machinery (tractors, sowing and harvesting plots, sprayers) and two cold rooms used for storing seeds.
